I gotta say this was an amazing airplane which i myself missed to get a ride on, i mean who doesn't wanna break the sound barrier flying twice the speed of sound, more than 340 meters per second!! Concorde rest in peace!!
I saw this plane @ Heathrow and was suprised by its small size in real life compared to most common passender aircraft. But don't be decieved, this thing can create such a racket on take off. I have never heard such a loud noise elsewhere. Probably explains why they were never allowed 2 fly @ night.
Peregrine, if u want a real speeding thrill, get yoself a ride on modern a fighter jet. Mbu some can reach speeds of Mach 2.8 (2.8 times the speed of sound) with 'afterburn' engaged. In otherwords, they can outrun most missiles. The draw back is that afterburn uses up a lot of fuel and if pilot is far from base, he may have 2 use other tricks 2 shake off missile - may run out of fuel before he gets home.
Yea the Concorde was designed to have a needle like fuselage reason being that it was a supersonic jet and they had to highly decrease drag as possible. It's true, that bird used to make noise on takeoff and it needed a longer runway but all in all it gave a new face to the passenger aviation sector.
Most combat fighter jets can reach mach 2+ but a few folks on this planet (experienced air force pilots) manage to feel the speed at that level and the experience isn't pleasant because of the enormous g-forces acting on your body.
P, if you are absed in the UK get yourself to Brooklands in Surrey they reassembled the concorde at the Brooklands Museumm near Mercedes world and you can get onto it. They simulate the experience of a concorde flight to Newyork. it is an incredible experience. You also get the opp to check out world war carriers and other classic cars. It is simply incredible!
