Cape Town, where I was, is actually very wet in winter. The Western Cape Province where Cape Town is located is surrounded and made up of mountains. The rocks and sparse bushes you see are because the steep hill I was climbing is right next to the Atlantic. High waves and winds keep battering the land so it is difficult finding 'proper soil' near the ocean.

It is the kalahari desert and tends to be with Cold -desert winters, unlike the hot desert( sahara). Isnt that right?

Not really. The area where I was is actually quite fertile. Most of the wine made in South Africa comes from the vineyards in this area. It is just that the mountain I was climbing was too rocky to support much plant life.
