For long the Ugandan education system even with the recent introductions of UPE and USE, is geared at graduating too many of its citizens who hold certificates at P7,S4, S6 and Diplomas and Degrees . Many of these graduates come out of school not havib=ng practical skills and thus find them selves looking for jobs most of the time.
But Mukono District has come out with a very good and practical idea of on job training and giving FREE VOCATIONAL TRAINING to the youth so as to empower them with the neccesasary skills and thus help eradicate poverty and also thereby fight against unemployment
http://www.newvision.co.ug/D/9/579/567958 a chance for the holders of S4 and S6 certificates.
this is the practtical education that is needed. some two years ago there was government talk of opening up a vocational secondary a school at every subcounty to absorb the graduates of UPE but now with the coming of USE its no longer posible to do the earlier project of vocation schools. may be it wolu be posiible to put up a vocation school per SSaza or county, but as the current government has multiplied so many district and counties , i wonder how practical it will be. iam also wondering --- will the youth change their attitude towards work and go for tese vocational trainings instead of waiting to hold the DIPLOMA AND DEGREE PAPER in their hands and fail to get employment?
