    Tinned Fene

Well folks, for want of a better word as the Baganda say  "the longer you live the more you see" or something along those lines anyway.

Having got back only a week ago I am missing home already so I got myself off to nearest matoke  town today by the name of West Hounslow to stock up on matoke and potatoes.

As  I waited in the queu I started to take in the items on the nearby shelf as one does and to my amazement I saw a tin marked JACK FRUIT IN SYRUP and another  GREEN JACKFRUIT IN WATER now the green stuff seemed weird according to the picture it would appear that the fene was harvested beofre it was ripe and it was packaged with it's outer skin and thus the name GREEN JACKFRUIT.

Now  who would ahve thought that the humble jackfruit would end up in a tin? If only my grandmother were here to see thisSurprise

Anyway good on him/her who thought of this.. more grease to their elbows.

Now whilst I am here, I wish to thank Khumalo for taking me to visit Jovia, her gran and her chums. It is a small world indeed, it turned that he knows my auntie who has a small shop in the neighbourhood and often shops there!

Another a big thank you to Kaks, for taking me around town one afternoon and saving me from being hit by a Boda Boda! I felt like right plonker trying to navigate my way out of a speeding Boda Boda, and Kaks imparted some words of wisdomWink

If it's going to be it's up to me

While you were having a great time in Ug I was in your neighborhood.  I loved it.  It did not rain on me even for one day.  SB and her mom treated to the best matooke one can have outside Ug.  I was so previlleged(sp) to meet SB and what a wonderful lady she is.  She is so bright I wish she could make the move to go back home and teach.  For those of you who have been here for a while; I met the photographer, she took the picture I have posted here.  Wonderful young lady and she has a way with that camera.

Vision I hope you had a great time.  When I came back, I needed a vacation to recover from a vacation.  I was on the go all the time.  By the way why was I charged more to get an early start on the trains..........LOL?  Next time you are in USA please stop by and say hello.  I cannot promise any matooke, because we do not get real matooke here.  SB took me to the market where she shops for Ug foods, I was so jealous(sp).

Anyway welcome back to your family; I loved your neighborhood.  I especially enjoyed walking by Wey River and picking  the blackberries oh yam!

LOL QS. U get charged more to get an early start on London Underground trains probably coz either they want 2 maximise ticket profits from desperate early passengers or they wanna keep crowds off the early trains. When I lived in London, I usually got on those trains after 9am to save money but arrived at uni late once or twice. Then there was that damned day that I got off a train one stop further than I should and consequently got lost in Central London for the next 3 hrs. Can u believe that was after living in London for 4 yrs? I still kick myself about it every time I remember it.

Vision, it was a pleasure dropping u off at that building, even though we later found out it wasnt the right one! Tip: When u r in Kampala, do as Kampalans do. If they play chicken, follow suit. (The only exception 4 me is boda bodas coz I dont do them!) As 4 the ffene, whatever next? Tinned matungunda & jambula? Hell, even nswa could be trick.

Hey Kaks, you missed your stop? early morning trains are expensive because they know people have no option but to get on to them they have to get to work.

Some Kampalans, look like they have a death wish in terms of how they cross the roads and drive so me thinks, it is better to be safe than sorry..hehehehe, maybe I am a chicken who knowsWink

Is jambula still available these days? Well if someone manages to put nswa in a tin, they would deserve a medal...

It at any time you were there and saw a baseball cap wearing Muzungo (sp) driving like a taxi driver, then that may have been me.  heheheheh.  I've adapted quickly to uganda and now my driving scares the hell out of my wife.  Speeding (yes), and taking my cue from the taxi drivers, anything is legal as long as you are not caught, or have about 30k ush to fatten the pockets of the police if you are caught.  heheheh.  I mostly stayed around Namongongo area but made it out every now and then.  But now that I am in the states waiting on news of a job, the sadness comes in that it will be so long before I see them again.  March is my next trip to uganda.

Mad_man please do not contribute to corruption.  Most of the time the police pull you over because they think you will pay up.  Please muzungu mad_man do not encourage it.  Is your wife with you in the States?  If not I'm sure she misses you already

    Re: Tinned Fene

I try to do the right thing when I am there, but when the money is tight, the money is tight.  My wife is in Uganda and it is soon a sad day.  Our 1 year anniversary is the 10th and  I will be here.  But we communicate often.  It was hard to leave her, but we have to make the sacrifices to be where we want to be in life.  More to come, later on.
