Yes. Nonetheless, there is a lesson for all of us to learn here. When u embrace the NIMBY (not in my back yard) philosophy and chuck dirt out of your house into the street, it has a way of coming back! The solution is to do things the right way!

You and I know that but we cant vouch for folks out there. Can you  imagine the recent foot and motuh disaster back here was a result of badly maintained drain at a government lab?!Sad

So I read. If it wasn't such a serious issue, I would have laughed my head off.

    Hello emboozelists

Sorry I have not been around; just to much to do and very little time.

Well I'm always defending Uganda cross contamination of potable water is not unique to Uganda.  Take a look, it went on for 2 years

    http://cfx.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20070823/news_lz1ed23top.html

I work in the water industry; you really have to stay on top of your game in order to protect the public.  A few of you saw my pix while at work when I was standing in water pipeline 24 feet below ground, I do it to make sure the sewer pipelines do not connect to potable pipelines.

The article did not say if got sick.  My family still boil water for drinking even if it is coming out of the pipelines

Re: Green Water in our Pipes - Chickens coming home to roost

A combination of the following may help:

    1. Relocate the water treatment plant to somewhere along the L.Vic shore where the pollution load in the water ain't so high. This solves many problems including reducing expenditure on raw water treatment and the danger of contamination of treated water by incoming sewage. However, this option is ruled out at the moment by financial implications (moving/purchasing new water treatment machinery, tanks, etc and laying new water pipelines all over K'la and its neighbourhood. This option is certainly ruled out at the moment. I can tell u that.

    2. Re-designing and reconstructing K'la's ancient sewer network. This should include building new sewerage treatment facilities to efficiently manage our liquid waste. Such facilites, if constructed, had better have the capacity to cope with K'la's increasing sewage output even 50 yrs from now. U can't keep building these things every 10 yrs or so just to be able 2 cope - that is a very expensive way of doing things. This sounds like the most reasonable option we have at the moment.

    3. We all pack up and leave the city. Perhaps the gov't builds a new, well-planned capital. Dunno. But I can tell ya few pipo r willing 2 leave K'la any time soon. K'la is where everything happens in UG - more or less.

Kakokolo, you are an environmental engineer. You should be able to issue fines to the agencies reposnible for the pollution and people that are responsible too!

I wonder how that would work though.Embarrassed

     Yeah right!! LOL.

NEMA and departments like DWD (Directorate of Water Dev't) are in charge of such stuff. The most I can do is give u an idea of what should be done - ideally.

Re: Green Water in our Pipes - Chickens coming home to roost

Kaks thanks for the link.  You know water pollution is happening everywhere.  The citizens want clean water and the sewer system that works with out paying for it.  The one issue here is the algea produces a toxin which cannot be killed by treating water with chlorine.  The govt must look for ways to improve and crack down on industries which dump industrial waste chemicals in the sewer chanels and eventually ends up in the lake creating a havoc like you seeing right now.

The politician can levy a tax to improve the sewer and water systems; but they are too chicken to do so because they will be voted out of office for raising taxes.  What will it take for politicians to do something?  Who knows, that is why we have global warming ppl not paying attention as to what they flush down the toilet or industry not intersted in what they dump down the drain out of site out of mind as long as they make their money.  I'm afraid it may take a few ppl dying before they can do anything so sad.

    My $ 0.02 worthy

The best place 2 live now are the villages upcountry in UG. The environment there is still pristine. Don't u agree QS?

Re: Green Water in our Pipes - Chickens coming home to roost

    Kaks

Again thanks for the link.  You are right, when I come home, I stay as far away from K'la as possible because of the noise, air, and whatever pollution there is in the atmosphere.

In the link, the govt or the powers to be are going at it the wrong way.  They need to educate the ppl and have the ppl buy into the program and then they can make some head way.  Just to push it down ppl's throats will not work.  One of the things which brings algea into the public waters are fertilizers, soaps which are being used when washing cars, and whatever ppl decide to wash down the storm drain.  Once those nutrients get in the receiving body of waters then you have the nitrates and phosphates start to develop.  Once the phosphates and nitrates get in the receiving waters combined with warn  weather; the algea is in celebration; plenty of food for them to grow.  This creates nightmares for water treatment plants; because they have to use loads and loads of chemicals in order to make the drinking water palatable for the general public to drink.  It makes the drinking water switchboard light up because of constant phone calls to why the drinking water smells bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The compounds the algea produces gives off; an offensive odor.  The govt could use copper sulphate to kill the algea in the lake and it will not affect the fishing industry.  The copper sulphate should not be the primary method of combating the problem.  Education should always be number one in fighting the pollution in our country.   Also there should be strict laws on industry what they dump in the creeks or rivers.
