The good thing is that Uganda as a nation, the international community and both the ruling party and the opposition parties in Uganda are aware of the POLITICAL WARMING that might lead to a serious Tsunami here in Uganda . The question is how ready are we  in the ministry of DISASTER PREPAREDNESS and REHABILITATION ?  God knows!!

I SERIOUS do wish she stays away.

When I was in Kampala in January I talked to some craft vendors that gather in front of the train station every Friday in Kampala. They told me that i should do something to let people know that they were not being allowed to sell in their market during the Queen's visit.

While big hoteliers benefit from the big business, which eventually trickles down to the common man- i know, there are those who will have to be cleared and hidden under rugs while the Queen is here. 

This is 2007 and colonialism is too fresh in Africa... she should stay away.

It will also teach our leaders(and our people) to be more responsible in their actions.  If you want to join the global community you must act like it.  You can't be licking up to the British and their royals, while dragging Indians in the street.

So stay away... we already got a few roads and hotels out the deal... I don't think we can get much more in the next few months....lol. Those that made investment for the occassion, i'm sure made decisions for the long run.

So stay away... we need to be tought a lesson!!

When I get home I'll post some photos of the vendors who say they will not be allowed to sell in the city during the Queen's snobbish visit.

Lol finally!  I feel ya! hahahahaha...If the queen don't make it - we still have the royal goat race to look forward to at Munyonyo.  I am looking forward to those fotos from your visit and more stories finally..

Though I do hope Charles makes it - if only to get his input towards a call for conservation of Uganda's natural resources could be tapped into...

I read The Times article and to be honest I think it was Irresponsible reporting!

I didnt read the article in the guardian though. But even though there were a number of facts, the way it was put was typical of the way Africa's hopes have been brought to zero with sweeping statements like this. Such unbalanced articles affect even the poor on the streets of Kampala because I think theres a potential loss of investment opportunities & Credibility in what we ask for as a country.

I wouldnt want to be defending what has been happening in fact I have been dissapointed with alot that has happened in Ug since last year, but for someone to say ' The Queen wdnt want to be somewhere where people are shooting at each other on the streets' is undermining the country considering that alot that has happened have been majorly attempted peaceful demos by the opposition to fight for constitutionalism.

I dont like the fact that the queen coming is so much of a big issue given the whole colonialism debate, but the bottom line for me is that we r poor and whenever you can get people to actually be on your streets and see for themselves opportunities for investment which all countries are fighting for now, the better for us.

 to ua question I say = I found myself migrating to the west at -7GMT this part of the western world, but not a kaguta-lander.

I hope the Queen will visit Uganda and on behalf of the Mighty Former British Empire make an apology for the slave trade errors made in the past by the Colonial Masters who were ruling on behalf of the British Empire,

 and then be able to address some issues like compensation for the articrafts  taken from the Uganda Kingdoms to the British Musems, and be able to compensate for the British Colonial Era long term decision to leave Bunyoro undeveloped because Omukama Kabalega and the Bunyoro Kingdom had given stiff and tough guerilla type resistance to the British rule in1870-1899..

Why should the Queen fear to visit? Let her come and see the developments and the underdevelopment that we are still experiencing here in Africa, Uganda... and see for herself how the western democracy  is struggling to adjust in its intermarriage with the Neo African Culture of TRAD-MODO political, socio-economic life of the Ugandan of 2007.

I absolutely don't need nothing from the Queen.  The truth is who knows where we would be without colonialism.  And if we are to dig deep into history looking for reparations and apologies... how far will we be willing to go?  Will this not set a precedent for the Basoga or Banyoro to seek the same from the Baganda for invading them in some day in history?  Should we seek the same from the Arabs for selling us off as slaves? Should the Tutsi be seeking reparations from the Hutu or vice versa... or should we wait for 100 years from now when one of these groups becomes wealthy and the other now has something to claim? Should the Egyptians be asking for reparations from Greece.... The Jews from the Egyptians and Italians... etc. Where will it stop?

The whole idea of reparations and looking for apologies to me is ridiculous....lol.... maybe I need some education in this.  When it comes to easily identifiable issues in recent history like the internment of the Japanese where the people concerned can easily be identified,then maybe...  then I agree that like in any legal battle, the wronged should be compensated. These legal claims should have expiration dates as in other cases of law.

So to me apologies will not do anything. A speech from a villager in a hut talking about issues we should concern ourselves in, like helping them fetch water or help him take care of the 20 unrelated AIDS orphans he/she is housing, is more valuable than a document written by 10-15 public relatrions proffessionals, advisers and lawyers for a Queen's nose-in-the-air speech.  I absolutely can't figure out why we are all getting excited about this Queen... She is not even our queen.... its simply amusing.

And then when and if they do decide to give us reparations... what then?  Who do we now blame for all of Africa's issues if this does not help?...lol.  Surely you don't think reparations will help much of the people who need it with all the corruption in place. They will spend the money on plane tickets to the West and spend the rest in the West thereby further promoting the economic growth of the West.

I totally think we can do it without reparations.  We have enough Ugandan proffessionals doing big things in and out of UG.... especially out of UG. We are the ones making the West what it is.

Actually we are the ones who should be apologizing... Many of us use Uganda's scarce resources to educate ourselves and as soon as we get that education many of us flee to the West and spend unteen dollars in Immigration out here for our families to also leave and become legalized in the West. So we live in a world of contradictions... I don't think the Queen or White Americans need to apologize to me about some historical deed done to my ancestors to make me know what I need to do or how I should feel about myself. What we need to concern ourselves with is what each of us is individually doing to improve what we have left our broke and corrupt government to deal with.

I was getting winded reading your post...............LOL I do agree with your trend of thought.  If we do not cut the ties of the past we will never stand to be truelly indipendent.  Thank you for your views.  We do not need the Queen for Uganda to play on the world stage.  Today I was listen to National Prodicasting Radio (NPR) and I was pleasantly surprised that a Ugandan writer was being interviewed.  Mr. Moses Isegawa was on and I must say I read one of his books a few years ago the Abyssinian Chronicles.  Mr. Isegawa was in NY invited by a group trying to promote writers from all over the world especially in small countries.

Yes Finally there are a lot of Ugandans doing good things in our country.  Forget the the Queen or as the Americans would put it S**** the her; I usually do not use that kind of language, my kids and my friends would be horrified if they heard me say or write it here........LOL

Aaaa do you remember the Commonwealth meeting in Singapore in 1971, Obote was there and gave a good speech and was supported very much by the African leaders  - oh he was an orator for sure! But then came the time bomb that while he had criticised the British for their  bad rule , he then got to learn that as the Commonwealth meeting was to come to an end , the news was that , the Last king of Scotland had been given a go ahead to  be installed as the Elder of Uganda.  Aaa ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY !

And so the CHOGM and the coming  or not coming of the Queen is becoming a hot issue in Uganda and in Britain. But who released the news that the Queenwould not come and that Uganda was in a bad situation?

 Aaa of course, the political leaders want to show the rest of the world that every thing is ok in Uganda and that the few scatterd Demos are the work of detractors who are against nation building. As for me, the game must continue ---- we await to see how it all ends.

I hear there is a drive to have the students learn more about the Commonwealth and CHOGM and the anthem ya Chogm and the portaits of the Queen .  But how will all this help the common man get out of his poverty?  The basic infrastructures are being improved in and around Kampala and Entebbe making the city shine and almost preparing to have the street kids and beggars not to appear on the streets  during those days. well, when it all ends then what? Pipo say alot of money will have been left in uganda----- but will that money trickle down to the rural development so that the 85 % of the population that live in the rural areas and the 40 % pipo living below poverty line on less than1US$ a day  can also participate in the advantages of the money brought by CHOGM?

Of course no one needs the queen’s visit but our input so far would be too much a waste if she doesn’t turn up… actually, her turning up is not all about it but the whole CHOGM. So stop thinking the queen think CHOGM… tho the queen is CHOGM.

It may not be beneficial to Ugandans but it’s too late to abort cos then we will lose even the little that’s left.

I also agree that the Queen isnt really needed, because she doesnt really call shots in Global politics. We need the Prime Minister more than her (Gordon Brown then?) and the other heads of state- Aus,Canada, Singapore, India etc who we may benefit from with a few deals.

 Some investment in infrastructure has been done which is good for Uganda, although except the hotels alot of it has been focused on the event rather than take advantage for the long term. Also there have been missed opportunities for investment. Because of the scale of spending that wd have been required if there were venues out of Kampala, i think its ok that most of the money has gone to Kampala, which anyway generates 40% of Uganda's GDP so the cow deserves to be fed after repetitive milking.

And so now the news is that

The UK govt confirms Kampala to host the CHOGM come November 2007.

what was and is and will be the politics behind  the recent rumours on Chogm not coming to Kampala? history will live to tell the story.
