Environmental Talk: Charcoal, Uganda's Darling Fuel

There is no market in Uganda where charcoal is not sold (usually in tons) and few households (even affluent ones) survive without a sigiri – a compact type of barbeque popular in Uganda... http://www.ugpulse.com/articles/daily/Environment.asp?id=907

I must comment on this one because of an experience dealing with charcoal and my plans to cook with it.  Oh how little did I know what I was getting in to thinking about cooking an Italian dish for my wife.  The start was the lighting of the charcoal.  I fanned and fanned and even the maid felt pitty on me and helped me out as I tried to prepare the food.  A small note to those that aren't experienced - don't attempt to boil water using charcoal if you are in a hurry - learned this the hard way.  So the wait was on, one pot attempting to boil water, another pot attempting to cook frozen vegtables, and (what worked out good) several pieces of chicken on the metal top cooking away.  After some time, I think it was around 2-3 hours the pasta was ready and I made a sauce as quickly as I cook.  Having taken so long with the pasta, then I had to place the meat back on the "grill" to heat it again for eating.  Now I am humbled into letting other's take care of the cooking, until next time when I get the urge and alot of time on my hands. Until next time . . . .

LOL. The adventures of MM and the sigiri. The maid must have laughed her head off. Moral of the story is that sigiris are not as energy efficient as most Ugandans tend 2 think.

Better late than never.  It takes a stronger individual to acknowledge his/her faults and bow to alter the course of action.

To remain the on the path that has been taken is another matter.  I understand now Uganda is going nuclear in looking for other means of energy sources.  I sincerely hope that adequate regulations to govern such projects are drawn up and applied as opposed to what is currently in practice of cutting corners and being eager "to just eat for the moment".
