I watched that clip and downloaded it from the web, having some knowledge about aviation the pilot is a hero! At that level for an airplane to regain lift is almost impossible, because of the slow speed of approach in preparation for landing, ground interference, a large amount of drag on the plane due to extended flaps.

He applied full thrust to the engines, pitched the nose up and escaped the inferno which would have been a crash caused by strong winds.

All in all he is an experienced pilot and deserves a medal.

Some folks are debating whether he should have attempted to land in Hamburg in the 1st place. Hamburg was his destination but some people feel he should have diverted to another airport until weather conditions in Hamburg improoved. I believe he only managed to succesfully abort the landing because a sudden face-wind blew. Otherwise, he would certainly have crashed.

Well we might not know until he tells us why he chose to land there, disasters don't just happen its a chain of critical events. In the end the pilot managed to react in a split second and saved first the lives of the passengers and crew and then the multi million dollar gigantic flying bird.

Since he said they simulate such events, well kudos to him, he got it right practically outside the simulator. Taking off and Landing are the most critical and difficult phases in flight. It's a nightmare to all pilots both experienced or armatures, anything can happen!

Your pilot? Sounds like u r loaded enuf 2 have a private plane. But if he can make it jump and hop down the runway at LHR, how much of your lunch do u keep down by the time u r airborne?

    Ndobo Super

I watched Air Crash Investigation's version of the story of this famous aircraft last nite. The Captain was awesome!!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider

The image below is of the actual plane aka 'Gimli Glider' that crash landed at Gimli, Manitoba in 1983.

    Re: Ndobo Super

Have yet to read that account Kaks - but I took my hat off to the BA pilot who recently prevented what might soon been a major crash at HTHR last year on landing a flight on its belly...After the kind of flight journey I had with air Brussels what with them trying to keep their costs low so they give us a plane which hadn't been serviced properly following an altercation with flying birds of the feather variety, I really really do say my prayers before boarding a plane - both for myself to remain calm and for the pilots to get us to our destination alive and well.
