Lol! Recycled gabbage is what we talk most of the time! Thanks for the article Ivan.
It is getting embarrasing to contemplate taking friends to visit the "real" Uganda due to the state of how persons have taken to the nortion of "take-away poo"! Fancy a grown person disposing of his/excrement in a plastic bag and disposing it willy-nilly into the streets! I used to think this kind of thing existed in parts of Nigeria only! This is not a joke people - this is Ug in the 2006 and this practice of chucking buveera containing human excrement is common sadly in some areas. Mind you - perhaps public toilets ought to be on the agenda for the KCC or regional counties!
Persons are not done with using the dreadful black plastic bags for everything right down to steaming food as part of their cooking preparation. I am not sure whether it's ingenuity gone mad - for those peddlers who paint fingernails also have something to answer for here! Ladies are obssessed with keeping their hands and feet painted they've lost track on how to keep basic hygiene of all else around them - and the menfolk - well... that's another story.
As for those toys sited in the article (I've fond memories of these!) I was hardpressed to see as many - kids now prefer to have imported cheap stuff from Asia to add to the headache of disposal. Those dolls from banana fibres you can well forget - most kids are playing around with european looking dolls. Is it any wonder they grow up competing to beome lighter in skin-tone so they can rival even the europeans?
Ps. Ivan - Macdo has granted us good news! - No more of those Disney toys which are the bain of so many of us parents out here as our kids drive you mad demanding to have those junk meals just so they can collect those annoying toys that end up maiming you from the floor or settee.
