pictures are good and look really from the past, but why do you over focus on the elephant?

    these are beautiful articles.

It gives me goose bumps when I read them, it's like looking through a time capsule at a Uganda we never knew existed, at least one we have never seen since we weren't born yet.

Re: Letters from Sonja: Murchison Falls in 1965

Hi marabou, thank you for responding to "Murchison Falls in 1965". Well, these pictures are more than 40 years old. In those days photography was more difficult than to-day and considering that they were taken with a rather simple camera - a Kodak Retina - without a tele lense, they did not turn out too bad. I always wished we had a tele lense for animal photography, as the animals have not always been so near. "Why did I over fucus on the elephant?" - I am sorry, but English is a foreign language to me and I don't really speak it since many, many years. That is the reason, why I don't quite understand your question. If you however mean that I have taken too many pictures of elephants - well these animals are really fascinating. They were in Murchison in abundance at that time and they did come very close. You could even meet them on your way from the lodge to the cabin, you spent the night in.

All the best to you - Sonja

Hi vision, although your response was addressed to marabou, I would like to know if you really could not see an elephant on the pictures. Or what did you mean?

    Kind regards, Sonja

Re: Letters from Sonja: Murchison Falls in 1965

Hi kakokoolo, thank you for responding to my pictures. I am really pleased that the pictures are still in that condition. There was colour photography in the meantime and we made many colour slides. Unfortunately many of the colour slides changed the colour during the years. Even in modern times  now it is sometimes rather difficult with colour. My son, for instance, made very many films while working in Papua New Guinea and many of them got  spoiled since, probably also due to climatic conditions. I am also glad that we always send home pictures to our parents as we wanted to share the beauty of Uganda with them. In fact these pictures came back to us after our parents passed away.

All the best to you - Sonja

Hi Soreel, thank you for your remarks on "Murchison Falls in 1965". I very often said, that I am not so happy with my writing, but if I can give you an idea about Uganda before your time, that makes me happy. At least I can give a little bit back of the happiest years in my life.

All the very best to you - Sonja

    Hi Sonja,

I have been to Murchison falls a few times and really loved to see the B&W pic of what it used to look like. You will probaly see the irony in the fact that although my forum name is Vision I have very poor eye sight and wear Varifocals. I honestly cant see the elphants in this pic that's why I asked the question! I probaly need to visit my optician sooner than I realisedSmile

Hello Sonja, good to hear from you still.  Thank you for all your continued stories and the pictures you've taken care to safe and share with us all on here.

I too may be requiring an optician as I'm afraid I can't spot the elephants!  Guess it may be a case of some member pointing out where they are hiding...

Re: Letters from Sonja: Murchison Falls in 1965

This case of the missing elephants is begining to be VERY interesting. Is it a color blindness issue? I know that I too have an ever so slight issue when it come colors- I found this out for the first time when I was 20 at some Doctor's place in Entebbe. But the elephants are very clear here... The image below is entirely one big elephant... I'm curious as what it looks like to Sugarbabes and Vision..... Out of interest, I could play with the colors, post the same pics with a different colors instead of the current grey-black-white and see if you can eventually spot the elephants... how about that?

Otherwise... what does the picture below look like to you if you care to share?

Letters from Sonja: Murchison Falls in 1965 LOL!!!! not in this foto!!!

Now I can see it though!!! I guess it showed me up for not having read this particular posting of Sonja's before opening ma big mouth!  Vision - you've got to open the article to note the other beautiful fotos that Sonja submitted with this article - simple nostalgia of what was!  There are more elephants upclose to the visitors lodges.

Lol Sonja - I can fully empathise with young Michael on not finding time for TV save for weekends in those days!  I consider this to be a blessing as even up to now I don't have time for TV thanks for all options of outdoor stuff there was whilst I was young. Nowadays TV is a huge integral part of peoples lives that they even have to have it in reality programs.  Ironically we give up doing outdoor activities to then pay to go to the gym!

Lol Admin, yes I can now see the elephants! Although I couldn't see any in the pic as shown in SB's post and like SB I had not gone behind the scenes to read the whole post so you have caught me too.... I will catch up with the rest of teh article.. I promise you I am not colour blind but possibly heading there!

My last visit to the park , I woke up at 4.00AM to see hippos eating grass right outside my bedroom window what a treat!

What an interesting story Sonja, I am a little Embarrassed for having missed it in the first instance. What a difference to how things used to be? Although one thing appears to remain cosntant, if you buy your holiday package with everything included, it is still cheaper. TV.... I have always preferred Radio, one uses ones' imagination a lot more then, someone put me off TV even more when she asked me whether I had given some thought to the fact that I was watching other people living their dreams and what was happening to my dreams in the mean time...

LOL @ y'all big gals. U got caught out by Sonja. At 1st I thought u were pulling her leg but it now appears u hadn't actually seen the pics.

Funny thing is, whenever I see pics like these (black & white) my brain gives me black and white images/impressions of life in those days. I tend to think that people in those days actually had black & white vision. Hahaha. But seriously, I always dream in black & white. Does any of u dream in colour?

Vision - that was so uncanny if not true@TV!  Thing that comes to ma mind about parking maself infront of the tele is that these guys are being paid (handsomely in most cases) to avail themselves on the box etc... so I ask maself what I'm I getting out of the minutes I'm parked watching them perform? If it works out to be worth ma gain, then I'll prolly give it time - otherwise - nope!

Though it does make for conversation at coffee breaks I guess when all you may have in common with various colleagues is what a given character did with who or wat in long-running soap dramas.

Re: Letters from Sonja: Murchison Falls in 1965

Kaks, who on earth do your remember what colour your dreams were in? I must pay attention to my dreams tonight and see if I dream in colour or B&W hahaha! chances are that I probaly will not fall asleep at all!

SB- all true re: TV. I had real problems in one of the jobs I had as I was the only one who did not watch Big Brother! fortunately everyone knew I was not into TV so talking to me about TV was a waste of time. one colleague used to plan her whole evening around TV and the next day that's all you would here aboutSad and the discussions were always lengthy and detailed especially regarding soaps! Another woman failed to complete an application for a Secondment op to head the department because HOLLY OAKS  was on. (i hope that's the correct name, anyway that's waht she said)Tongue Tied

    Sonja

So glad to have you writing again.  It was your letters that attracted me to this website.  Your pictures and your reminding me of Uganda before Idi Amin; I thank you very much for the memories.  The youngsters on this website I'm sure read your letters with interest and ask themselves, did that really happen or was that really our Uganda????????????

    Thank you Sonja
