A country by the name UGANDA
As the Arab slave traders began to move into the interior of present day East Africa some time in the early 1800s it became clearer and clearer that deep inside the central Africa there lay peoples of different tribes that had never been in contact with the outside world or the western civilisation. And so as the Arabs finally came to Buganda Kigdom and reached at the palace of the Kabaka in 1844 they were asked if there are other people out there who are moving around and skirting the borders of Buganda Kingdom and of Bunyoro Kingdom. The Arabs said yes - out there are some white men who are explores and are moving from place to place in search of ivory and slaves and the big rivers and lakes. And because they were moviing around and around, the Arabs and the Swahili called these movers the WAZUNGu = in swahili saying that WATU WALE WANAZUNGA ZUNGA KILA MAHALE PO POTE = that those people are moving around and every where WANAZUNGA ZUNGA, then came the word WAZUNGU from the movement of the explores moving up and down like a drankard does moving up and down. Actually up to now in Runyoro Language the word OKUZUNGA ZUNGA refers to the same activity of moving up and down as if drunk and moving everywhere
What did these people find when they came to the inside of East and Central Africa..... they found tribes that had Chiefs and tribes that had kings like the kings of www.bunyoro-kitara.com Bunyoro, Buganda and Ankole. And when the Arab traders and explorers were asked by the Birtish explores the WAZUNGU, and asked which tribes were deep inside the heart of East Africa the Arabs told them that there were tribes of people called the Uganda, Unyoro, Unkole,Usoga ----- and as the explorers finally came to the Buganda Kingdom they saw the tribes and wrote back home that in the heart of Africa are peoples of these tribes the Unyoro=banyoro, Usoga=basoga, Unkole=banyankole and Uganda=baganda who have kings and kingdoms and also mentioned the other tribes that had Chiefs and not kings. And so as the British consolidated their grip on colonizing the tribes of the interlacustrine region or what today is called the Great Lakes Region towards Uganda, these tribes were given the NAME which the Swahili refered to the people of Buganda and that name of Uganda became the new name of the new born nation of UGANDA PROTECTORATE - a nation that collected or gathered several tribes under the umbrella of one bigger state called UGANDA
