45 years of independence - what has Uganda achieved

I have been thinking...yeah..thinking..45 years on, how independent is Uganda and what is the meaning of independence?

Back then, independence meant that Uganda was getting rid of foreign influence in the decision-making process, and the flag,and power were literally handed over to Ugandans on that wonderful day. 45 years later, we still ourselves waiting for a bureaucrat somewhere in Washington, London, Brussels or Beijing to sign off on whether we can do anything that is groundbreaking,from approving our budget to deciding whether we get drugs for our children.

We continue to send our ministers on begging (read consultative) meetings in the major capitals of the world

We cannot afford to look after our very own in the north and the east, and are still waiting on the WFP

Uganda might be independent but we are independent in word only.

Toiletless men arrested in Uganda

Police in eastern Uganda have arrested more than 70 men because their homes do not have a pit latrine.

They were targeted as part of home-to-home sanitary inspections in Tororo district, intended to ensure that proper toilets are installed.

Tororo district authorities want to discourage people from the common practice of defecating in bushes.

They said "toilet defaulters" would be freed if they agreed to dig a pit latrine within seven days.

Now I wonder what shall happen when CHOGM comes along and we need to host guests in your huts

Uganda Police capture flood doomsday cult

Ugandan police have arrested 12 leaders of a doomsday cult that believes floods swamping large parts of the north and east of the country herald the end of the world.

Police said the 12 cult leaders would be charged with unlawful assembly and being idle and disorderly.

The leader of the group, which called itself the New Jerusalem Church, was 37-year-old Francis Opwonya.

"The creator told me five things will happen as a sign of the end of the world before the last judgment," he was quoted as saying by the Vision after his arrest.

The first was the country's HIV/AIDS epidemic, then famine, then earthquakes, Opwonya said. Floods and hailstones came last.

The group sprinkled water on followers and smeared others with butter extracted from the shea tree. Officers removed several items used as idols, including a bamboo pole that Opwonya said symbolised the key God would use to lock the main gate of Jerusalem on judgment day.

Witchdoctor caught in court

Nigerian police have arrested a witchdoctor employed by a politician to perform rituals at an election court.

Officers caught Oluwole Abiodun at the court building in southwestern Ondo state with charms and copies of the Bible and Koran in a black plastic bag.A pot containing a rabbit, seven eggs, cowrie shells and palm oil was found nearby.

Abiodun said that he was sent by one of the principal officers of the state House of Assembly to perform some rituals in the court premises. Hundreds of cases are being heard across Nigeria to resolve disputes arising from April elections that were so heavily rigged they were deemed not credible by international observers. The witchdoctor's rituals would have been intended to ensure that the challenge to the election of the politician failed.
