look at the world through my eyes

45 years of independence - what has Uganda achieved

I have been thinking...yeah..thinking..45 years on, how independent is Uganda and what is the meaning of independence?

Back then, independence meant that Uganda was getting rid of foreign influence in the decision-making process, and the flag, and power were literally handed over to Ugandans on that wonderful day. 45 years later, we still ourselves waiting for a bureaucrat somewhere in Washington, London, Brussels or Beijing to sign off on whether we can do anything that is groundbreaking, from approving our budget to deciding whether we get drugs for our children.

We continue to send our ministers on begging (read consultative) meetings in the major capitals of the world

We cannot afford to look after our very own in the north and the east, and are still waiting on the WFP

Uganda might be independent but we are independent in word only.

If Independence from Britain and from Colinialism was equated with Freeodm and UHURU in Swahili language, then I agree that 45 yrs later yes Uganda has not yet attained UHURU or liberation from the international enslaving politics and economics.

We still depend so much on the outside world even for the world food program to supply food to the flood hit areas. Amin had put up a policy of every family to have a graden for the nation so that food is stored for emergency. I remember back then at home the Milir=tary Administratuiomn Chiefs at the now LC1 and Lc2 levels would come to inspect the village home cassava gardens for the government > and thats how Amin came up with the Idea of putting a big food store or Silo at Nnalukolongo-Kampala for storing Buwunga or cassava and maize flour and other cereals like milletand sorghum. But the he was over thrown and the project--- i dont know aht happened next???

Perhaps the project plans are in a desk somewhere in the ministry of Agriculture. Today, the main focus of the government is to move Uganda from an agro-based society to an industrialized society. So you will find most of the incentives given to local and foreign investors are geared to generating jobs in the industrial sector. Hopefully, in the long run, it will generate fiscal and monetary independence
